It's one of those beautiful weather days, sunny and warm with just enough cool breeze to open the doors and windows and it weirdly feels almost like an early spring day rather than an early fall day. I set a goal for myself of writing something this weekend and this qualifies, though I cheated, just a little. This started as (one of MANY!) unfinished fragments sitting in my fic file, and so I shook it out, reworked it mostly and am calling it done. One of my very few (if not the only?!) 'unrequited' Aragorn/Boromir.

It's grey skies outside, and it's raining, and we're under a tornado watch compliments of hurricane Delta, and (almost) all the kitties are sleeping, and the lights are flickering for some unknown reason, so what better time than to get some fannish activities in? I've been (sloooowly) working on posting all my fic over at A03. Lately I've been taken with the need to have it all archived somewhere, if no for no one's enjoyment but my own. God forbid, if there's another incident like last year, at least I'll have it stored somewhere, gah! Anyway, in messing around with this I've realized two things: I wrote more VigBean fic than I remembered, and, I wrote like, a metric ton of drabbles...and I love my drabbles! Why aren't drabbles still a thing!? Anyway, most of the fic I'm moving over maybe slightly edited, but this one, while the form and function are exactly the same, is heavily revised, so I'm posting this revised version. The original still exists in my LJ post, but I like this version better.

When I say 'AU' I really mean, Aragorn is basically a vampire and Boromir is his favorite snack (and also Faramir's) there's no 'fellowship', Eomer and Eowyn are Denethor's kids, so yeah, it's wild. I think I found this fic originally via the Fellowship website. Back then I was on the Fellowship email mailing list (remember those?!) so this one has been around a while! It's got a lot going on but the thing that stuck with me most is Aragorn's absolute adoration of Boromir. It may not be for everyone so check out the warnings. So, obviously still on a LOTR kick! Now, I live for stories where Boromir survives Amon Hen, especially if his King is by his side and is resolved not to let his Steward go, not for 'crown or queen'. This is a lovely, warm fic layered with a bit of intrigue (there's some that aren't on board for the new post-war Gondor and her new King) and an understanding, loving Arwen that not only tolerates her King's love for his Steward, and in this fic, holds to the truth that it was Boromir that set Aragorn firmly onto the path to the kingship at long last. Add a dash of Legolas and Gimli and what's not to love? I really enjoy post-war stories like these where there are battles of a different kind left to fight. I think my favorite thing here, other than a surviving Boromir, is that Boromir wears both the Evenstar and the ring of Barahir on a chain around his neck, put there by Aragorn. I love that visual. Ok, so enough mucking about, go read! ;)

A different bargain then, bent sweetly along the shell of his ear, honeyed tone foretelling vows fulfilled, a city safeguarded, a hobbit spared if only he would do this small thing but Aragorn perceived lethal lies layered in the contract and rejected all.

Finally, a small, unadorned whisper, “He will not fall, and will be yours.”

Aragorn’s whole heart listened.

And snapping the chain from around Frodo’s neck was such a little thing.
