If a ficlet can be odd and sappy simultaneously, this is it, I think. When I started it was supposed to be a drabble with fierce-never-say-die!Viggo holding on to what he wants, (namely Sean but if you read my journal you already knew that) but somewhere the train left the tracks and well...sap. Though, a little sap is good for the soul, yeah? ;)
Title: Dream of Sean

*~*~*
Dreams are like paintings, sometimes made of a myriad of colors, layers, all blending into one true vision, and sometimes the colors are few, flat and though these dreams might speak just as loudly as any other, they never really take hold of a person’s heart and hopes.
Viggo knows about dreams, he’s had a few. Some have touched him deeply and those he’s kept, and yet others he’s put away on a shelf in his mind and just forgotten, and yet even others lay deep in the circles of his heart, living and breathing even after they’ve been dashed and broken.
Sean was a dream Viggo had dared reach for, a beautiful vision of what could’ve been, but a vision that had existed only in Viggo’s heart, apparently. Dreams never seem to hold their shape in the harsh light of the waking world, and Viggo’s dream of Sean had drained away through his fingers like a handful of sand over the span of half a year where they’d been parted by their work and their lives and just the world in general. Sean had slowly, inevitably slipped away, and nothing Viggo could say could hold him in place.
The death of dreams can break a person, and the end of Viggo’s unrealized hope very nearly sent him to his knees, and for a time he dared not dream again at all, and so he put Sean upon a shelf and hoped the colors would fade and be forgotten, but they would not. They remained, they breathed and they bled and began to heal and in the dark of night they returned to him, and when he chased them away they followed him into the daylight and would not be silent.
It was then that Viggo realized, his dream had never faded, had never faltered, he had only given it up for a time, but that time was over and armed with the certainty of a healing heart that knew that what once was could be again, Viggo dared let loose his dream and he stepped forward out of the painful memories and into a new day, and in his fearlessness Viggo learned something new.
It hadn’t been just his dream, it’d been Sean’s as well and all that had been needed was for Viggo to realize that dreams are like paintings. The special ones are shared. The special ones are made of a myriad of layers, of colors, some bright, some dark, but all of which blend together to make something good and real and true: love, life, hope...his dream of Sean.
