He’s uneasy today; his smiles never quite aimed at your eyes. He’s smiling at your edges and you don’t care for it. You decide that evasiveness doesn’t suit him.
You know in a moment you’ll catch his eye and he’ll fade, become distant and it’ll be so slight the youngsters seated at the dining table beside him won’t even sense it, but you will.
Even watching him feels like an intrusion, as if you shouldn’t look without permission. You wonder if maybe last night under the stars you should have asked permission. You wonder if he regrets what you don’t.
