Taking a moment,

to think about a comment I've just read that likens RPS to deplorable activities such as celebrity stalking. Yes, I understand what this person was saying, and why they said it, and yes they have a right to think what they want. I guess I just don't like feeling like I've just been labeled some kind of slack jawed deviant for reading and writing rps.
Does this notion make me want to stop reading and writing rps?
Heh.
Nope.
...on second thought, when it comes to Viggo/Sean, that slack jawed deviant part may apply to me after all, *grin*

Date: 2004-01-11 06:53 pm (UTC)As for stalking... well, I fail to see how RPS is anything like stalking, unless a writer actually goes through a celeb's trash for their source material or something.
IMO, RPS is not terribly different from someone posting about a smutty dream they had about a certain celeb - it's just indulging in fantasies.
As long as the writer takes some reasonable precautions to prevent the fic from being seen by anyone who randomly googles for a celeb name - it's all good.

Yes, fantasies is the key word, right? I'm not sure if the comment I was privy to was implying that rps leads to stalking, or if they meant rps is something a 'stalker' might take part in. Either way, I don't care for the implication that I'm a 'bad' person for reading/writing rps.
But, live and let live, just another day in rps-land. People have strong feelings on the subject and that's fine, just don't get between me and my Viggo/Sean. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ;)

Date: 2004-01-11 07:33 pm (UTC)Yep. Some girls fantasize about getting married to Orlando. Some other girls might fantasize about Orlando shagging Viggo. As long as they don't go around saying that what happens in their fanfics is true, I don't see how it's harming anyone.

Your Viggo/Sean? *g* You're not hoarding the Viggo/Sean, are you, Archet? ;-) Do remember to share with the rest of us twisted immoral deviants!

Hoarding? Viggo/Sean? I wouldn't do such a thing,
pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!Heh. Well, I'm slowly gathering up the courage to seek out a beta for a few things, RPS-V/S as well as A/B & an A/A/B. After doing this I may either a.) be ready to share with my fellow immoral deviants, or b.) keep them all to myself. *g**wants more RPS from you*Thank you! That's good to know, ;)no subject
Date: 2004-01-11 07:26 pm (UTC)Don't consider that a personal affront. We don't share the same opinion about the genre either, but that doesn't hinder us to remain friends, right? Or am I mistaken?

Date: 2004-01-11 08:13 pm (UTC)No, you are not mistaken. I know you don't care for rps, and you know I am not interested in many of the LOTR arenas you are, and that has *not* been a problem between us. I have no problem with people having issues or strong feelings about rps or anything else, for that matter.
I did not like being told that rps is linked to stalking when I've never, ever seen or heard any such thing. I did not like the feeling it gave me, of being judged, and I didn't care for the way it was phrased at all. I can have strong feelings too. Having said that, I also did not wish to bring any tension to your haven, I have kept my rps hobby out of there b/c it has no place there, and because you aren't comfortable with the subject.
You know of the comment I referred to in my post, and I hope you can see why I felt the way I did. It's not something I'm angry over, but it irritated me, and it struck me as a bit silly seeing a blanket generalization coming from someone who seems to be like a very intelligent person.
This wasn't about you, it was about one comment made by someone else and my feeling about that. And the one reply I made was to answer someone else's questions about rps and held not a single whiff of rebuke. You might want to request that this subject be discussed off list if they wish to hopefully avoid any arguments.

Date: 2004-01-12 03:03 am (UTC)We're not friends because we agree on every little thing, we're friends because we still like one another in spite of our differences. RPS is simply one of those differences, they're a lot of other things we can and do share. So, no more apologies, let's just consider it done and move on.
*hugs*

Date: 2004-01-11 08:59 pm (UTC)I don't mind when people have a dislike for RPS. I don't mind when people don't care for slash. Or fanfiction. Or pumpkin pie. What I hate is when they take their dislike to extremes. I don't like being told that what I do is akin to rape, stalking, or (in some cases) being a Nazi. *rolls eyes* Yes yes, I get that RPS gives people the heebie-jeebies. I'm sure not forcing anyone to read my work, though.

Date: 2004-01-12 03:21 am (UTC)Yes, yes and yes. Everything you just said. *g* And speaking of your work, I want to take this opportunity to go all fangirly and say how much I enjoy your Sean-centric fiction. I've been awful *hangs head* about giving feedback in all corners of my fandoms for a long time. Cruelty was the first thing of yours I read, I think, but it was Captivation that just knocked me out. I mean, speechlessness, staring at the screen, speechless. And the Peirce/Sean! That arc hurts, but oh it hurts so good. *g*
I'm addicted to your Sean, in all his incarnations/universes and it's about time I said so.
*mwah!*

Date: 2004-01-12 07:11 am (UTC)I can't claim any moral high ground when it comes to RPS, but I do bristle when people rank it up with really severe crimes against humanity. That's just absurd--it's the same old story, people attack what they don't understand. And no, you don't have to like it, but you don't have to banish us all to hell, either. *sigh*
And please let me join you in fangirling over helens' Sean!! *squees in appreciation*

Date: 2004-01-25 06:29 am (UTC)I know a LOT of writers who don't want to go anywhere near the subject of their fics, because they want to keep the fantasy intact.
I think I'm falling into that category these days with V/S, well, partially. I liked hearing/reading news of Sean, but Viggo for some reason I want to steer clear of.
