He’s in my quarters on the floor by the door, staring, quiet, and I know it’s one of those nights. Those where the Starbuckian charm isn’t strong enough to keep him safe from whatever has burrowed beneath that smiling shield he holds between himself and the universe. Only sometimes am I allowed far enough behind that charming shield to wipe the tears from his face, pull him close.

I taste his tears on my fingertips; no water could ever be purer, or dearer to me. Only sometimes does he give them. I hold him tight and tell myself it’s enough.
