*~**~*~**~*

I’ve always loved the night sky. To gaze upon the stars hung high and wonder at them, at what secrets they might know has long been a habit of mine. I have done so all my life, since I was very young for the stars have always fascinated me, though I know not why. Perhaps it is because they seem so bright, so near and yet so far away all at once...

I remember how on many a night you would find me sitting by my window, gazing out. I remember how you would scold me and grumble that I should be tucked away in bed, resting, for all soldiers need their rest but that instead, more often than not, you ended up joining me and together we would simply watch the night unfold above us.

You may not have known it, brother, but I treasured those times, I always will.

I treasure these memories, those nights, the long chain of them that began long ago in our youth and that has stretched across my life, into manhood. In the beginning it was two young children looking out, and then later two young men, and finally two grown men that had, somewhere in the midst of the passing years, become lovers. As men we had not the chance to be together as often as I would have liked, though such circumstance only served to make the times we had all the more precious.

I remember a spring night in particular where I wound my arms about your waist and leaned into your warmth as the night breathed coolness against our naked skin. I remember that the black sky was so thick with stars that they seemed alive, and that they streaked across the sky as lines of fire, falling, before fading away. I asked you why they fell so and now, standing here beneath another black sky streaked with stars, bereft of your warmth, I remember your smile, how you leaned back into my arms, rested your head on my shoulder and smiled. I could see it in the starlight. I remember your answer, a whisper in my memory...

Who can say why they fall from their high places, Faramir? Perhaps so all the others might shine all the brighter.

Oh, my brother, I did not understand you then, perhaps I was not even really listening. Having you so close, so relaxed in my arms, partaking of the comfort I offered commanded most of my attention, but now, without you, I understand. I understand your words, and I have to smile.

I miss you, my bright, beloved fallen star. I miss you so, and one day I too will fall and on that day I will come find you, and together we will streak across the skies and invite all below us to gaze up, and wonder. For now, I will watch the stars for I can still see your smile in their light. For now I will wait until it is my time to fall and fade, to be with you once more.
