I’m not sure just what it is that pulls me from sleep, the slight shift of weight as he moves his leg over mine, the curl of his arm across my waist. Whatever it is, I wake before him, and decide to let him rest, while I look my fill.

Today the sun is white-gold, it presses its fingers against the window, slides right through. It touches him, and suddenly, he is golden too. He moves under the warmth, mumbles soft, morning nonsense. I can’t take my eyes from him, and smile to myself, feeling proud, humbled, happy, feeling a cocktail of things. That’s what he does to me, and he’s not even conscious.

He sleeps, and I breathe him in, my nose next to his hair. I taste him, my lips careful, light, pressed to that perfect spot, just above the arch of his eyebrow. He sleeps, and I wonder what brand of dreams pass behind his closed eyes, and if I am there, a part of his dreaming. He sleeps, and I listen to the gentle music of his breathing, finding it familiar, its even tempo a thing of quiet beauty.

He sleeps, his arm relaxed around my waist, head tucked against my pillow. I watch, and will wait for him. I’ll guard his morning dreams, and enjoy just this, my lover, at rest, until he opens his fine, green eyes, and then I will tell him . . . “Happy Birthday, Sean.”
